AFGHANISTAN
Armed clashes in Baghlan, Kapisa, Kunduz and Nangarhar provinces have displaced more than 20,200 people. Since January 2017, more than 146,400 people were driven from their homes due to conflict across Afghanistan. This is one quarter less compared to the same period in 2016, in which 196,112 people were displaced. Some 58 per cent of all displaced people are girls and boys under 18 years old. Displacement has been reported in 29 out of the 34 provinces.
MYANMAR
A WFP assessment conducted in the northern part of Rakhine State found worsening food security in already highly vulnerable areas following the 9 October 2016 attacks and subsequent security operations. Nearly one third of the population were identified as severely food-insecure and in need of humanitarian assistance. About two thirds of the households could not meet an adequate diet and an estimated 225,800 people were suffering from hunger. None of the children who were assessed met the minimum adequate diet – an estimated 80,500 children under age-5 will be in need of treatment for acute malnutrition within the next 12 months.
PAKISTAN
Over the past week, flash floods resulting from monsoon rains have affected the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Sindh, Punjab, and Pakistan Administered Kashmir. As of 7 July, over 40 people have been killed, 61 injured and 60 houses damaged. Some 1,000 houses are without road access. The Government is responding to the emergency and is distributing food and medicine in the affected areas. International assistance has not been requested.
PHILIPPINES
On 10 July (09:41, UTC+8), a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck Leyte province. Ground shaking with intensity 5 tremors (on the 10-level intensity scale) was experienced in Ormoc City and Kananga municipalities. The provinces of Cebu, Negros Oriental and Bohol also felt the earthquake. The tremor, which was an aftershock of the 6.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the same area on 6 July, was recorded about 9 kilometers southeast of Ormoc City with a depth of one kilometer. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) expect damages following the ground shaking and has warned that aftershocks will be felt up to the next six months. NGO partners which conducted local assessments indicate that local authorities have responded to the immediate needs of affected communities and international support is not required.
As of 9 July, an estimated 471,200 people have been displaced by armed conflict in Marawi City (Lanao del Sur province). A total of 87 evacuation centres continue to host 23,300 people (most of the displaced are living in host communities). As of 6 July, the Crisis Management Committee of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao confirmed 52 civilian deaths and 295 people are still missing. The military estimates about 300 people remain trapped in the conflict zone in Marawi City. Humanitarian partners continue to deliver food and non-food items and provide WASH, health and nutrition services to complement the Government’s response.
